Day 27 – God Created us for Marriage; Lust Says we Were Created for Sex
Marriage is according to creation, and is eternally fulfilled in Jesus, but lust is according to sin.
Genesis 2:18-25 –
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” 19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all the livestock, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. 22 And the Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, “At last this is bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called ‘woman,’ Because she was taken out of man.” 24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed.
In the beginning, Adam named all the animals, exercising the dominion God had given him, but there was no complementary human for him. So, God put him in a deep sleep, took one of his ribs and formed Eve. Adam then was missing a piece of his own body. And that rib, now Eve, was missing being part of him as well. God brought the two back together in marriage to become husband and wife, to become one flesh: “For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh” (Gen 2:24).
Therefore, all males and females are missing a piece of their bodies, until they pursue an opposite-sex Christian to marry, according to Scripture. You could say that marriage is in the DNA of every human being. Marriage is the rule and singleness is the exception. Paul says, due to the distress in Corinth at the time, singleness was preferrable, for devotion to the Lord, but each had his gift from the Lord (1 Cor 7:7, 26). Thus, marriage requires being born male or female and being single requires an extra gift of singleness from the Lord, not found in creation. Unbelievers do not possess this gift; though they possess the gift of marriage because they were created male or female.
