Day 8 – God is True; Lust is a Liar

To lust is to lie about God and His promises.

Psalm 116:11 - ¹¹ I said in my alarm, “All mankind are liars.”

The Psalmist says that all men are liars—a statement unique to this sin among many more in Scripture. Why are all men liars? Because, in order to be bent against God, one must be contrary to God, who is true. Every sinner, therefore, is inherently contrary to God. Thus, every man has deceit in his heart, and from it sprouts all manner of lust and sin.

Titus 1:2 - ² in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began.

Hebrews 6:18 - ¹⁸ so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.

1 John 5:20 - ²⁰ And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

All men are liars but God never lies. He is true in His very nature, and it is utterly impossible for Him to lie. He is immutable, never changing.

Not only is God true and never changes in His being, He is also unchanging in His commitments. Every promise He makes, every covenant He enters, He fulfills without fail. He cannot do otherwise. God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to give His church understanding “so that we may know Him who is true.” Through Jesus Christ, we come to know this truth, because God ordained Him for this purpose.

“And we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.” There is only one true God, and we are in Him through our union with Jesus Christ, who is God the Son Incarnate.
